Completed on May 7, 1983, Surrounded Islands was on view to the public by land, air, and water for two weeks. The installation consisted of 6.5 million square feet of fabric surrounding 11 islands in Biscayne Bay. The work of art was intended to highlight the elements of land and water between which the people of Miami live. It’s temporary quality emphasized the tender feelings of knowing that something won’t last while paying homage to the permanence of nature.
